Today we celebrate the 322nd anniversary of the birth of Marguerite d’Youville. First Canadian-born saint, she was the founder and inspiration behind the Grey Nuns of Montreal’s congregation. We invite you to discover an exhibition dedicated to her at the Sainte-Marguerite-d’Youville sanctuary in Varennes.
The statue was unveiled and blessed on July 25, 1943 by Mgr Anastase Foret, Bishop of St. Jean. The work of the Carli-Petrucci firm, it was a gift to Varennes from the Grey Nuns of Montreal on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the founding of its parish.
Damaged, it was stored in a shed in 1972, then restored; it now sits in the inner courtyard of the Maison de Mère d’Youville in Montreal.
