{"id":5317,"date":"2018-07-27T15:12:17","date_gmt":"2018-07-27T19:12:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgm.qc.ca\/uncategorized\/the-harvest-at-saint-charles-farm\/"},"modified":"2022-01-25T15:12:46","modified_gmt":"2022-01-25T20:12:46","slug":"the-harvest-at-saint-charles-farm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgm.qc.ca\/en\/uncategorized\/the-harvest-at-saint-charles-farm\/","title":{"rendered":"The Harvest at Saint-Charles Farm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For this harvest season, we present you today some pictures of the Saint-Charles Farm located on Chemin de la C\u00f4te-de-Liesse, in Saint-Laurent.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Grey Nuns of Montreal Archives, F054B, film of Sr. Flore Barrette, harvesting at Saint-Charles Farm, ca. 1951 :<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lZ6ml0qjeQg?rel=0\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1286\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1286\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1285\" src=\"https:\/\/sgm.qc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/L071-Y3-B-700x549.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"706\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1286\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Archives of the Grey Nuns of Montreal, Ferme Saint-Charles, L071-Y3-B<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The land of the Saint-Charles Farm was purchased in 1907.<\/p>\n<p>With a surface area of 575 arpents (of which nearly 500 were tillable), this farm produced many varieties of cereals, vegetables and fruits, including: legumes, clover, alfalfa, hay, barley, oats, potatoes, beets, corn, carrots, beans, green peas, onions, grapes, apples, squash, etc. A herd of cows, pigs, chickens and horses were also present on the farm. The Notre-Dame-de-Liesse School, the Cr\u00e8che d&#8217;Youville, the Mother House and a few other houses thus benefited from important food products.<\/p>\n<p>The rapid urbanization and industrialization of the C\u00f4te-de-Liesse area prompted the community to sell the farm in 1953.
