As part of the Quebec Waste Reduction Week, let us emphasize the considerable social contribution of the Vestiaire des pauvres.
Founded in 1903 by Sr. Rose-de-Lima Bonneau, the Vestiaire des pauvres (or Œuvre des Sans Foyers de l’Hospice St-Antoine) was designed to provide food and clothing to the many homeless people in downtown Montreal.
In 1912, the Notre-Dame Parish Ladies’ Worker Association was founded. The ladies came every Thursday to the sewing room to mend or refurbish clothing.
The Vestiaire becomes theAccueil Bonneau in 1968. Even today, this charity continues to help those most in need. In 2019, 68601 essential items were distributed to 5225 clients.
Before throwing your clothes in the garbage, consider giving them a second life by donating them to shelters or organizations in your area.
